The PTA consists of a number of committees that plan and organize the programs and activities of the PTA. Each committee has a term of two years and one vote on the PTA's board. Any or all the committee members can attend PTA meetings and cast its vote. You can volunteer to help any PTA programs by completing the Parent Volunteer form or by calling Abbie Zola at 689-9413.
Committee Descriptions
Acknowledgements: Provides the PTA's expression of sympathy, get well or congratulations to faculty and administration through the purchase of cards or dedication of library books.
Collections: Coordinates the collection of box tops and computer ink cartridges for redemption.
Family Events: Responsible for planning and scheduling activities that involve the whole family.
Friend Finder: Gathers and prepares information for Friend Finder, our school directory. Uses Excel and the Washington Vo Tech Printing Co. to produce.
Fundraising: Responsible for organizing and collecting our non-fundraising donations in the fall.
Goodwill and Safety: Several programs fall under this category.
This committee includes our "Be An Angel" program-the collection and distribution of food baskets to needy families in the fall/winter and spring.
This committee also includes our Bike Safety program. This program occurs in June for one day at Port Colden and one day at Brass Castle. Several different people will usually be involved in this committee.
Holiday Shop: Organizes the in-school holiday shopping experience for students in early December.
Hospitality: Coordinates the donations of refreshments and treats for Back to School nights, the Winter Concert, and the Spring Concert.
Membership: Responsible for planning the membership campaign and collection of dues.
Publicity: Publishes the monthly two-sided newsletter and disburses it at Brass Castle and Port Colden.
Reading Programs: This committee includes multiple programs:
Book Fairs- responsible for coordinating the fall and spring book fairs at both schools.
Adopt-A-Book- responsible for distributing information to families about purchasing ("adopting") books for our library. Is also responsible for ordering the books.
Penny Jar collection- responsible for distributing jars to classrooms. Once penny jars are full, the chair is responsible for ordering books
Read Across America- coordinates a reading-related contest/program with the teachers that culminates on Dr. Seuss' birthday in early March.
Reflections: Promotes and coordinates the National PTA contest for arts and literature at our schools county level.
Room Representatives: Assigns room representatives to each classroom, holds a meeting with room reps to discuss their responsibilities, and coordinates Staff Appreciation Week.
Scholarships: Coordinates the reading of applications for our two $500 scholarships given to Warren Hills HS students and coordinates the sixth grade Helping Hand Award. The recipient of this award is selected by the sixth grade teachers and is based upon his/her ability to be a good, caring and thoughtful person. Usually the former President fulfills this roll.
School Spirit: Plans school spirit activities at each school. Usually has one person assigned to BC and PC to plan and implement appropriate activities.
Seasonal Events: Responsible for planning fall and spring events for both schools, specifically, the fall dance for 4th-6th grades, the Fall Fun Day for Pre-K thru 3rd grades, the spring dance for 4th-6th grades, and the spring outing for Pre-K thru 3rd Grades.
Sixth Grade Farewell: Organizes the 6th grade graduation dance.
Student Incentives: Brass Castle: responsible for the school store in the library. This is an incentive program that ties in with the Accelerated Reading Program. At Port Colden and for our kindergartners, the chairperson is responsible for the Treasure Chest program. This person coordinates with the teachers in ordering prizes as incentives for their rewards system.
Student Programs: This committee also includes several programs:
Spelling Bee- responsible for ordering trophies and spelling bee pins, coordinating Bee with the Express Times (usually in January), getting volunteers to help at event. This event is for 5th and 6th graders.
Kindergarten Registration- Coordinates kindergarten registration with school and organizes volunteers to help at the registration which is usually held two mornings in April.
Field Day- coordinates water booth and Popsicle treats at both schools, working with Phys Ed teachers. Major responsibility is organizing volunteers for the day.
It is also important to mention that each committee is given a budget and it is the chairperson's responsibility to set and stay within budget. We hope this gives you a better understanding of what we do. If you are interested in participating in any of these committees please let us know!
