Port Colden Methodist Church

The Port Colden Methodist Church was built in 1893. It had its beginnings in the late 1700's and early 1800's when a small group met in the barn of the Woolston family for church services. A circuit rider was paid to stop on Tuesday evenings once every four weeks to hold services. This practice continued for many years until more room was needed. Eventually, the members joined with the Washington Methodist Church.

In 1874 they formed the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Port Colden. They held their first meeting on the second floor of the red brick Port Colden Schoolhouse. The bell was placed in the schoolhouse as a gift from the Sunday School superintendent, Asabell Gaylord.

For nineteen years services were held in the school until the present church was built in 1893. On May 17,1893 Simon W. Nunn purchased land from John W. Woolston for $150. One week later on May 24, 1893, he donated this same land to the church. During the same year the church was built.

The church remains much the same as it was originally, except for two additions. It presently has a small but very active congregation.
